President Hu Jintao Meets Australian Prime Minister
2003-08-18

On the afternoon of August 18, 2003, President Hu Jintao met with Australian Prime Minister John Howard at the Great Hall of the People.

Hu said that China-Australia relations have made great headway since the establishment of diplomatic relations more than 30 years ago. The leaders of the two countries have kept close contact. Political dialogue between the two sides has increased mutual understanding and trust. Economic cooperation and trade have been expanding, with steady increase of two-way investment. China and Australia have become important partners of trade and investment, and they have kept constant contacts over regional and international issues.

Hu said that China and Australia are both in the Asia-Pacific region. Under the current situation of accelerated economic globalization and regional cooperation, cooperation between the two countries in bilateral and multi-lateral fields needs to be further explored and deepened, with great potential for mutually-beneficial cooperation and broad prospects. To realize common development through strengthening cooperation between China and Australia will serve the fundamental interests of both countries and their peoples. It will also be good for the peace, stability, development and prosperity of the region. Under the principles of mutual respect, equality and mutual benefit, seeking common ground while reserving differences, and common development, China is ready to work with Australia for the long-term steady growth of full cooperative relations between the two countries in the new century.

Howard completely agreed with Hu’s appraisal of bilateral relations. He said the two countries witnessed a smooth growth of bilateral relations because they have respected each other and sought common ground while reserving differences. Countries differ on certain issues, but it is more important to constantly expand common interests and seek common ground. Australia highly appreciates China’s constructive role in regional and international issues. The Chinese government has won world respect by successfully keeping SARS under control not long ago. Australia will work with China, and maintain and promote the good momentum of relations through increasing exchanges of personnel and strengthening trade and economic cooperation.

Hu and Howard also exchanged views on the nuclear issue on the Korean Peninsula, the Middle East situation and global anti-terrorism.
